This page is a guide, not legal advice. Rules change. Always confirm with the Mozambique embassy or consulate in your country before you travel.
South African passport holders
- No visa required for stays up to 30 days (SADC agreement)
- Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date
- At least 3 blank pages for entry/exit stamps
- Proof of return travel and accommodation may be requested at the border — we'll provide a booking confirmation letter
Other SADC citizens
Same as South Africa — no visa required for stays up to 30 days. Applies to passport holders from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Eswatini, Tanzania, Seychelles, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Everyone else (UK, EU, US, Australia, etc.)
- Visa on arrival is generally available at Maputo airport and major land borders
- An eVisa can be applied for in advance — we strongly recommend this over visa-on-arrival
- Same passport rules: 6 months validity, 3 blank pages
- Proof of accommodation (we'll provide a confirmation letter) and a return ticket are required
Yellow fever
A yellow fever certificate is required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
Crossing with your own vehicle
If you're driving to Kosi Bay yourself, you'll need to prepare for the border crossing. Get this sorted before you leave — turning around for missing paperwork is no fun.
Required documentation
- Valid passport of the driver
- Certified copy of the vehicle registration papers in the name of the driver
- If the vehicle isn't in the driver's name: a letter of authority from the registered owner
- If the vehicle is still financed: a letter of authority from the bank with dates of travel, plus vehicle licence papers
- Valid driver's licence
- Declaration form and Temporary Import Permit for the vehicle — issued at the border, compulsory
- Third-party insurance — letter from your insurer, compulsory
Required gear in the vehicle
- 2 red warning triangles (don't need to be displayed, just present)
- Reflective jackets — if more than two people are travelling in the car, two jackets are required
- Yellow and blue Mozambique warning triangle stickers — if towing a trailer, you need two: one on the front bumper of the vehicle, one on the rear of the trailer
- ZA country sticker on the vehicle
You can pick up the stickers, triangles and reflective jackets at Outdoor Warehouse or most outdoor stores nationwide.
